How to Prepare your yacht for transport:
While we handle the rest, from planning to delivering it safely, you have some work to do to prepare your yacht meticulously for transport. Here are certain things you need to consider while doing so:
- Proper cleansing of the yacht: It involves cleaning the vessel entirely, which can also help spot any existing damage or scratches.
- Secure All Loose Items: Remove or firmly secure any loose gear, electronics, furniture, or personal belongings from both the interior and exterior to prevent damage in transit.
- Drain Fluids & Reduce Fuel: For safety and weight management, fuel and water tanks should be partially emptied, and all systems (AC, bilge pumps, etc.) should be checked or shut down as required.
- Protect Fragile Components: Items like windshields, propellers, antennas, radar arches, and navigation equipment may need to be removed or padded for extra protection.
- Remove Valuables & Documents: Always take out any valuables, sensitive paperwork, or legal documents before handing over your vessel for transport.
- Document the existing condition: Take time-stamped photos or videos of your yacht for any existing damage. It will help as a reference for post-inspection. Also, coordinate with us regarding any specifications.
COST FOR SHIPPING A YACHT
The cost of shipping a yacht can vary significantly depending on several factors, including the distance, destination, vessel size, and transport method. On average, yacht transport via cargo ship can cost between $20 and $25 per nautical mile.
EXAMPLE SCENARIO:
Transporting a 40-foot yacht from Florida to the Mediterranean, covering approximately 4,500 nautical miles, would cost around $90,000 to $112,500.
Yacht delivery services, which charge a daily rate or flat fee, can range from $1,000 to $3,000 per day, depending on the yacht’s size and crew requirements. Additional expenses may include fuel, insurance, permits, and customs fees.
Factors Affecting the Cost of Shipping a Yacht
- Size & Weight of the yacht: The boat’s size is a significant factor that contributes to the typical cost. For example, standard-sized boats can be transported using standard containers and trailers, whereas larger boats cannot be transported in the same manner. It can also affect which routes a boat transport company can take if transporting by road. Additionally, larger boats require more extensive handling and oversized load permits, which increase the overall cost.
Please measure your yacht accurately:
- Length: Measure from the tip of the bow to the center of the stern, including any fixed extensions like swim platforms or bowsprits.
- Height: Measure from the bottom of the keel to the highest fixed point on the yacht—this might include radar arches, masts (if fixed), or flybridges.
- Beam (Width): Measure the widest point of the yacht, typically across the deck or rub rails.
Yachts exceeding 13’6” in height or 8’6” in beam are classified as oversized loads. Transporting such vessels requires special permits, routing, and often the use of escort vehicles—significantly increasing overall shipping costs.
- Additional services: Larger boats also require oversized load permits and additional handling services during the loading and unloading process, which adds to the overall cost. Furthermore, transporting a larger boat to urban areas often requires escort vehicles, which contributes to the overall cost.
- Distance: The distance between the pickup and destination location is also a significant factor. Longer routes typically cost less per mile and incur higher overall costs. Local hauls and intercity movements tend to have lower prices than interstate or nationwide shipments. Additionally, for shorter regional distances, inland transportation on a trailer is used, which is more cost-effective than other options.
- Peak and off-peak seasons: Summers and springs are typically peak seasons for the transportation industry; hence, due to limited carrier availability and tighter schedules, prices tend to increase. However, off-peak seasons offer more discounted prices and flexible scheduling.
- Pickup & delivery locations: Depending on the ease of access to the pickup and delivery location, prices may fluctuate. Remote areas, with limited access, may cost more than central locations, as they require extra miles to pick up the boat.
- Flexibility of schedule: Flexible shipping dates often lead to better rates. Rushed or guaranteed delivery services will typically cost more.
